Google’s Good to Know campaign aims to help people stay safe on the Internet and manage the information they share online.

Sunday Times reports that Google is partnering with Sri Lanka’s Information Communication Technology Agency (ICTA) and the Ministry of Child Development and Women’s Affairs to launch the campaign on 29th November at the Mount Lavinia Hotel. A trilingual website is to be launched to commemorate the commencement of this campaign.

Around 150 representatives from student leaders, government officials, media, teachers, NGOs’ and other stakeholders have been invited for the event, according to a media statement issued by Rohan Jayaweera, Google Sri Lanka’s Country Consultant.

“One of Google’s top priorities is ensuring that users have a positive and meaningful experience when they use the Internet. Every day thousands of Sri Lankans, primarily students and users under the age of 18, go online for the first time, hence we all have a responsibility to make sure that Sri Lankan users know how to stay safe online,” he said.

The statement added that Sri Lanka’s youth often are more familiar with the Internet than their parents or teachers. “We hope that these tools/information/access to knowledge will be especially useful to Sri Lankan parents and teachers so they can make sure their children and students are staying safe online,” it said.

You can access to Google get to know information from their web site: http://www.google.lk/goodtoknow/

Careers: Getting a BPO job in Sri Lanka

$

0

Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) is the act of transferring (Outsourcing) some business processes to an outside service provider to achieve cost reductions while improving service quality. Outsourcing is the delegation of work from an organization/company to a service provider company.

// ]]>

How big is BPO industry in Sri Lanka?

According to the recent study by A.T. Kearney (Consultancy work done for ICTA, Sri Lanka) more than 300 IT and BPO companies have operations in Sri Lanka, more than 60,000 working in IT or BPO jobs. Sri Lanka is ranked among the Top 50 Global Outsourcing destinations and ranked among Top 20 Emerging Cities by Global Services Magazine.

With basic computer and communication skills you can get a job in a BPO company. Accountants, lawyers, doctors, and architects can enter professional KPO careers.

What are the skills required for getting in to a BPO?

The skills requirement varies significantly from company to company based on what business process they provide for the clients. Skills required to get in to a BPO can vary from just having good communication and analytics skills, OL/ALs to MBA’s & PhDs.

With basic level of skills (computer skills, communication skills and English knowledge) many people can get a good job in a BPO company. (Source: Getting in to a Career in BPO: http://www.itpro.lk/node/221 )

The Higher end BPOs, also called KPOs (Knowledge Process Outsourcing) generally requires a specialized skills. Sri Lankann professionals such as accountants, lawyers, doctors, and architects can enter these careers. Students graduating higher education degrees in technical (engineering) and business (management) disciplines can also enter into this field.

Sri Lanka has the the second-highest number of Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) students in the world and thousands of students also have qualifications from the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) and the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT). Sri Lanka also boasts a significant number of graduates and prospective graduates with U.S. qualifications such as certified public accountants (CPA). These students can enter into financial and accounting outsourcing (FAO) sector.

Several well-known international firms such as HSBC, IFS, Motorola, HP subsidiary MphasiS, RR Donnelley, and WNS have established R&D, IT, and BPO centers in Sri Lanka. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka-based firms provide advanced services to blue-chip global clients, including Google, Lenovo, Microsoft, Nokia, JPMorgan, the London Stock Exchange, Santander Bank, and Emirates Airlines.

http://www.atkearney.com/index.php/Publications/competitive-benchmarking-sri-lanka-knowledge-services.html)

How to get a Job in a Sri Lankan BPO Company?

All most, all the BPO companies hire people though out the year and the best way is to approach the company direct. Most of the companies, have information and instructions on how to apply on their web sites. Increasingly, BPO companies are also focusing on career fairs and special hiring events to recruit people. (See www.ITpro.lk Events section for such events). Some companies, will do walk-in-interviews at these events and it pays for you to come prepared with a CV. You may even walk out with a job!

Selecting courses, careers- Do students make correct choices?

$

Findings of recent debate on Higher Education hosted by the Guardian, in association with the Higher Education Academy appeared on ”The Guardian” Newspaper (UK). These findings focused on whether students are getting all the information they need to make the right choices.

We list some the key findings here as some of them are relevant in selecting courses, degrees, careers and Institutes by Sri Lankan students and parents.

• Students do not always make rational decisions about what and where they will study.

• Peer pressure can be an influential factor in the decisions people make about higher education. In Sri Lanka also students make choices based on the opinions of their friends and family.

• The lack of independent careers advice and guidance makes it more difficult for young people – particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds – to make decisions about their future.

• Used in isolation, the Key Information Set (Information such as student satisfaction, graduate destinations, and accommodation and other costs) has limited value for prospective university applicants. In Sri Lanka many Educational Institutes do not provide these information available, and even students or parents do not bother to consider them.

• The increase in tuition fees has not greatly influenced students’ choices about where to study – if anything it has made them more determined to apply to elite universities. In Sri Lanka some parents think that if you spend more on education, that will secure a better employment.

• Today’s students who are paying higher tuition fees want a marketable degree that offers a return on investment in their future earnings.

Peer Evaluation – Students can comment on courses and institutes on studentlanka.com website.

• Marketing has a crucial role to play in identifying and promoting the distinctiveness of particular higher education institutions – which is vital in a more competitive marketplace. In Sri Lanka also you can see almost all private higher Educational Institutes put self promotional advertisements on news papers. For Newspapers, Educational Supplements are weekly revenue earning mechanism, hence editorial staff write promotional articles on these courses. There is a lack of ranking and accreditation of private or public higher education courses in Sri Lanka.

AAT Association of Accounting Technicians – A quick guide

Accountant is a qualified person who is trained in bookkeeping and in preparation, auditing and analysis of accounts. Accountants prepare annual reports and financial statements for planning and decision making, and advise on tax laws and investment opportunities.

The term “Accounting Technician” is of recent origin. Accounting Technicians are Middle Level Professional Accountants.

AAT – The Association of Accounting Technicians of Sri Lanka

AATSL was established in 1987 on the model of the AAT (UK) by Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka (CA Sri Lanka). AAT institute is an Associate Membership of the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC) which is a key body for Accountants, and it has the distinction of being the first Associate Member of the Confederation of Asian Pacific Accountants (CAPA), a leading network of accounting bodies in the region.

AAT Examinations

AAT Examinations are held at three levels namely, Foundation, Intermediate and Final, in all three language media i.e. Sinhala, English & Tamil, twice a year in June and December. The duration of each level is six months; thus three levels can be completed within 1 ½ years by G.C.E. (A/L) and (O/L) students and in 1 year by G.C.E. (A/L) Commerce stream students.

AATSL EXAMINATION SYLLABUS AND STRUCTURE

Benefits of following AAT (Higher education and career prospects)

AAT qualification is the easiest way to get into other higher education and getting a job in Accounting or Management field. After AAT you can enter into Chartered Accountancy, CIMA or University degrees (in Accounting, Management, Law or Administration).

Accounting Technicians are Middle Level Professional Accountants immediately after obtaining the Associate Membership (MAAT). However by gaining experience in the field of Accountancy they can reach to Senior Technician Level (SAT) and Fellow Technician Level (FMAAT), which are considered as well groomed Professional Accountants. One can add more value and recognition to this qualification by gaining qualifications in other Professional Accountancy bodies.

AAT Sri Lanka students have fared exceptionally well in exams both within Sri Lanka and overseas. AAT Sri Lanka members are employed in different organizations across the country both in the public and private sectors.
